Miss Sylvia - Studio Owner
Miss Sylvia is extremely excited for this new opportunity in her life, to combine her education and her love of dance! Hence Starbound Dance Center was born!
Sylvia’s love of dance began at the very young age of 3, at the University of Lethbridge, under Mary Falconer. She has pursued dance in several streams including recreationally and competitively at couple of local dance studios; as well as being very involved in the Dance Program at her high school LCI.
After high school, she attended the University of Lethbridge pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Management, majoring in Human Resources and Labour Relations. Her interest in the business world stemmed at a young age, being the grand-daughter of an Entrepreneur; which lead her to pursue a degree in Management. Combined with her love of dance, she ultimately decided to open a dance studio in her hometown, Starbound Dance Center!
As a young dancer, Sylvia trained extensively in lyrical, jazz, contemporary and ballet but has experience in many other disciples including hip hop, swing, modern, tap, and pointe. In addition to dancing at a studio, she has taken Dance 9, 15/25 and performed in numerous dance productions with Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, under the direction of Betty Poulsen and Alisha Hornberger. While at LCI she had roles in 4 different shows including the works of Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and performed alongside a live band, Jason & The Diatonics. While in high school she was awarded two Fine Arts of Excellence Awards.
In 2017 she attended her first dance teaching expo: Calgary Dance Teacher Expo, where she was fortunate enough to attend seminars and classes taught by Brian Foley; who has trained with Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins and Michael Bennett, Kimberly Kay; So You Think You Can Dance, Hairspray and Chicago, and Suzanne Blake Gerety; director of the leading online resource for dance studio owners world-wide.
Since then, she has had the opportunity to attend many different workshops and be able to learn from amazing choreographers and mentors from all over the world.
Apart from dance, Miss Sylvia enjoys cooking, true-crime documentaries and trying to keep her plants alive.
Sylvia teaches a diverse variety of styles and has been awarded for her efforts at competition. Her very first year of teaching she won an Outstanding Choreography award at competition for her Junior swing-jazz routine "Jitterbug" at the age of 16.
